With Marcela Frey and Kali Buttrick in India
Dates & Duration: 30 September – 07 October, 2024
(6 days / 7 nights)

We may not have much choice with what life brings into our life, but we always have a choice with how we react.
All experiences expire in time, but our reactions to the experiences leave a mark behind and continues to shape Who I am.
The key to understanding ‘who I am’ is to observe those small reactions, with the shield of Yin in the left and sword of Yang in the right.
The sweet spot is somewhere in the middle!

The concept of yin and yang represents two sides of life we face every day in our life: pleasant and unpleasant, happy and unhappy, clarity and confusion, yearnings and fears, hopes and frustrations etc. Each of us have to face the forces of yin and yang, however, it is common for one to be more dominant than another. In pursuit of our material obligations, sometimes we are compelled to foster yang energy, at the cost of ignoring Yin energy, which is not only relaxing but a necessity to nurture creativity and appreciation for the small things in life!

This Yin Yang Yoga Retreat at AyurYoga Eco-Ashram is led by Marcela Frey, Yin Yoga teacher, accompanied with Kali Buttrick, a professional psychotherapist, both teachers having more than three decades of professional experience in their field. The in-house teachers of the ashram will also offer meditation and traditional hatha sessions, amidst the beautiful riverside organic farm outside Mysore in Karnataka, India.

Yin-Yang Balance

This unique retreat offers the opportunity to explore the connections between our material obligations and psychological well-being. The 2-hour morning yoga session is based on dynamic Hatha Yoga, focusing on building strength, along with detox breathing techniques and pranayamas. Another 2-hour evening yoga session will focus on release of stress from the sub-conscious body/mind through Yin Yoga, combined with long Yoga Nidra to restore our connections between our body and mind. Besides 5 hours/day of practice on the yoga mat, including the early morning meditation, this retreat includes 3 hours/day of theory, workshops and sharing circles to explore the psychological tools to cope with the challenges of life!

Yoga sessions combine dynamic, strengthening postures of Hatha Yoga with the deep, meditative asana of Yin Yoga, creating a balanced practice suitable for all. Daily workshops on the theory of yin yoga and trauma-sensitive activities, such as sharing circles, painting, story telling, forest therapy etc., helps to process the subconscious waves that are expected to arise in this kind of retreat setting.

The exploration of breath, movement, and mindfulness in this retreat helps to create a safe and nurturing space to explore the physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions, while willing to face the realities of our suppressions, stress, and trauma from the past, so that we can open up our self to the infinite possibilities of Life!

With the gentle guidance and mindful practices from Marcela and Kali, this retreat aims to help participants connect with their Self with compassion, process their emotions, and cultivate lasting resilience and healing. All participants are also to invited to take up one complimentary one-to-one consultation with Kali, who is not only a psychotherapist by profession but also ardent practitioner of Yoga and Meditation and completed teacher training at AyurYoga Eco-Ashram.

Who Can Come?

This retreat is more suitable for Yoga students who already know the basics of yoga and feel fit enough for 8+hour/day schedules, psychologically willing to face the depths of their mind, and not ashamed to laugh loud or cry without any reservations! This yoga retreat is especially beneficial for yoga teachers, to experience yin yoga and trauma-informed mindfulness activities, which you can integrate into your own teachings to further help students in your community.

Please note: this retreat is not suitable for people currently going through trauma or with active mental health problems. If you have any doubts, please email us to set up a brief consultation with Kali to discuss further.

The Lead Teachers for this Yin Yang Yoga Retreat

Marcela Frey, Yoga Teacher E-RYT 500

Marcela Frey Yoga Teacher at AyurYoga Eco-Ashram

Marcela is a warm and empathic yoga practitioner, with 35 years of experience in the filed of Yoga. Besides, 700 hours of accredited training hours and teaching experience across four continents, Marcela is fortunate to have learned from some of iconic teachers such as Indra Devi and Sara Powers, known as the mother of Yin Yoga.

Marcela is also a Bioflow Professional, working with the breath to release and redefine trauma from the body/mind, and a Focusing Facilitator, allowing the body to talk through physical sensations. Having completed 300 hours Advanced Yoga Teacher Training at AyurYoga Eco-Ashram, Marcela understands both yin and yang of a yoga practice and using the power of deep breathing and yoga nidras for improving mental health.

Marcela’s passion for teaching is equally combined with her deep respect and value of creating a safe space for her clients.

Kali Buttrick, Therapist

Kali is an experienced and relatable therapist specialized in trauma. Kali’s unique approach to mental health emphasizes the importance of reconnecting with the body and using the natural environment as a catalyst for healing. After experiencing significant childhood trauma, compounded by interventions from psychiatry, Kali became determined to investigate new ways to heal and make sense of the profound impact trauma had on her mind and body.

Kali is a sought-after trainer and speaker, sharing her expertise and insights on trauma and the body with mental health professionals and in clinical settings. This includes working with The Natural Psychiatrist in Greenwich, London where she helps research, design and deliver educational workshops in mental health and wellbeing.

Kali first stayed at AyurYoga Eco-Ashram in 2022. During this time, she experienced a complete paradigm shift in her understanding of somatic healing. She realized while she had mentally and intellectually succeeded in processing and transcending her experiences, it was only when she felt safely held by the ashram community and lovingly supported by her yoga teacher Marcela, that her yoga practice allowed her to finally feel and truly release the trauma that had been held in her body.

The bond between Kali and Marcela has grown and they are now passionate about working together to create retreats that offer a safe space and opportunity for others to share in this experience.  AyurYoga Eco-Ashram is very glad to share this space with our alumni who came here as students and now taking up the responsibility to expand the horizon of yoga with our guests.
